Σιβυλλικοὶ Χρησμοὶ hoc est Sibyllina Oracula... a D. Iohanne Opsopoeo Bretanno... interpretatione Latina Sebastiani Castalionis..., Paris, 1599.
First edition: ‘Stichoi sibyllas tis Erythraias’ in the edition of Theocritus’s Idylls by Aldus in 1495. The tradition of the Sibyl’s oracles has numerous and diverse origins, mainly Greek and Judean. A significant collection was also kept in Rome in the days of Augustus but was destroyed in the sacking of the city by Stilicho. These prophetic formulations were engendered between the second century bc and second century ad and was collected anonymously in Late Antiquity.
