First edition of an adaptation and paraphrase of the work by Mme. Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont (1711-1780), which bore the title Le Magasin des Enfans, ou Dialogues entre une sage gouvernaute avec ses élèves, London, 1756. This adaptation by Vlandis became an important manual of the Enlightenment and was repeatedly reprinted by Venice’s Greek printing houses – at least 17 times (1788-1864). The success of the edition is due to the highly intelligible way in which it was written: in the vernacular and in the form of dialogue and narrative by the teacher, with stories and matters dealing with the Old Testament, Geography, Physics and History.
