Michael Maroullos-Tarchaniotes. Eppigrammatum libri IV. Hymni, Florence, Societas Colubris, 26 November 1497.
Last incunable edition of Marullos’s Epigrammata but the first containing the Hymni, the first two books of the Epigrammata constituting a reprint of the Roman edition (1486-). The Hymni are comprised in four books, dedicated to Antonio San Severino, Marullos’s friend and patron. They are a total of twenty-six poems glorifying ancient gods, Zeus, Pallas Athene, Eros; Eternity, Kronos, Aphrodite, Hermes and others and express the period of maturity of his work. He himself maintained that this was his contribution to Humanism.
The book was printed at one of the three last printers’ established in Florence before 1500, known as both Colubris Unio and Compagnia del Drago. This copy has a handmade adornment on the title page: the title is contained within a banner – possibly due to Marullos’s military service – while the base is ornamented with his coat of arms. It is possibly his personal copy.
