Ἐτυμολογικὸν Μέγα κατὰ ἀλφάβητον πάνυ ὠφέλιμον πάνυ ὠφέλιμον [Published by Nikolaos Vlastos], Venice, Zacharias Kallierges for Nikolaos Vlastos, 1499.
First edition of the Etymologicum Magnum and first product of the first Greek printing house established in Venice before 1499 owned by N. Vlastos. It was staffed exclusively by Greeks, in fact Cretans. Besides Kallierges and Vlastos, scholars such as Markos Mousouros, Ioannes Grigoropoulos, Ioannes Rossos and others had a significant role to play. A new typeface was cut by Kallierges and special headings and initial letters of diverse sizes were designed according to the script of Rossos. All pages have red-printing, whilst large-size initials and headings adorn each first letter of the alphabet. The colophon is enriched with the marks, of the publisher and the printer respectively, of Vlastos and Kallierges, in red-printing. The second edition of the Etymologicum as well as the third, were issued in the sixteenth century by Federico Torresano (Venice, 1549) and Hieronymo Commelini (Heidelberg, 1594); see Nos. 90 and 154 respectively.
