Phrynichus. Φρυνίχου, Ἐκλογὴ ÄĹºö½ ῥημάτων, καὶ ὀνομάτων..., Rome, Zacharias Kallierges, 1 July 1517.
First edition of the Ἐκλογὴ (Eklogi) by Phrynichus and the sole integral edition of the sixteenth century, comprised however in the volume: Th. Magister, Atthidos eklogai, Paris, M. Vascosanum, 1532. This piece by Phrynichus; of the second half of the second century ad; was composed upon advice from the emperor Commodus’s letter-writer, Corlianus. It is a compendium of principal words found in attic writers of the Classical period, from Aeschylus to Demosthenes. According to Phrynichus, the model of the Attic dialect is the tongue of Plato, Aeschines, Demosthenes and others, whereas of the poets he distinguished the three tragedians as well as of course Aristophanes.
About the significance of this work, it is stressed that publication of its edition occupied David Hoeschel (Lyon, 1601), while its Augsburg reprint in 1603 comprised J. Scaliger’s Notes, Notae ad Phrynichium.
