Arsenius Apostoles. Ἀποφθέγματα Φιλοσόφων καὶ Στρατηγῶν, ῾Ρητόρων τε καὶ Ποιητῶν. Συλλεγέντα, παρὰ Ἀρσενίου Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Μονεμβασίας, Rome, [Hellenic Gymnasium of Rome], c. 1520.
First and only edition, possibly the last essay in printing of the Greek Gymnasium printing house. For the Ἀποφθέγματα (Apofthegmata), Apostoles drew material from a compilation of his father’s, Michael, of proverbs, sayings and apophthegms, known as Ἰωνιάς (Ionias). A table of contents shows that the material was gleaned from 123 writings by Greeks such as Agathocles, Arimnestus, Archilamus, Zaratus et al. Arsenios had ahead of time announced the publication of this edition in the prologue to the Γαλεομυομαχία (Galeomyomachia), which was perhaps a ‘dress rehearsal’ of Aldus’s printing house, undated, in about 1495.
