Varinus Favorinus. Μέγα καὶ πάνυ ὠφέλιμον Λεξικὸν..., Rome, Zacharias Kallierges, 27 May 1523.
First edition of this exceptionally voluminous work, also representing the last printing essay by Kallierges in Rome, in 1523. The author, Varinus Favorinus (circa 1458-1537), a pupil of Angelo Poliziano and of Ianos Laskaris, held the Grammar chair of the Studio in Florence from 1492. His devotion to the Greek language earned him a publication by Aldus’s printing house of a book of grammar entitled Κέρας Ἀμαλθείας καὶ Κῆποι Ἀδώνιδος (Keras Amaltheias ke Kipoi Adonidos) (1496). Its publication gave great lustre to the Rome’s scholarly circles and there were many reprints despite its size, until into the eighteenth century. The title page is ornamented with Kallierges’s double-headed eagle and three Greek epigrams, by Angelus Politianus, Laskaris and Scipio Carteromachus honouring the author of the work, first published by Aldus Manutius in the Keras Amaltheias (Venice, 1496).
