Giovanni-Battista Guarini. Il Pastor Fido, without place, 1639.
First edition of the poetic oeuvre of Guarini (1537-1612), a famous Italian poet of the rulers’ courts of his country, printed in 1590. It met with acclaim and was translated into all the European languages. The work is thematically inspired by the tragic story of Coresios and Callirhoe as told by Pausanias. The Greek translation by Michael Soummakes was printed in Venice by the Giulianis’s printing house in 1658.
