Theognis - Phocylides - Pythagoras - Solon. Γνωμογράφοι Θεόγνιδος Μεγαρέως Γνῶμαι Φωκυλίδου... Πυθαγόρου... Σόλωνος... Theognides... Opera Friderici Sylburgii, Utrecht, ex officinâ Hermannus Ribbus, 1651.
First edition of the ‘Gnomai’ attributed to Theognis (6th-5th c bc), printed by Aldus in Venice in 1495 with many subsequent reprints. The collection has no unity as it has considerably been added to, all the more since even the Alexandrian literati did not have a manuscript of the poet at hand. Further additions even in Byzantine times should not be excuded. Poems by Phocylides were originally integrally published in Latin, printed in Augsburg by Johann Froschauer, in about 1500 in the Latin translation by Jacobus Locher. Poems of Phicylides are included in the original in the Aldine edition of Theocritus as well as in the edition by Aldus, and in K. Laskaris’s Grammar. The first integral edition in greek circulated in 1536 in Cracow from the Martin Cromer press. According to a Catalogue by Diogenes Laertes, besides his Laws, Solon of Athens wrote speeches, elegies and other works of poetry which substantial positions have survived of the Elegies and the Iambics. His works were first published in 1512 in diverse collections of poetry.
