Nikephoros Xanthopoulos. L’Histoire Ecclesiastique de Nicefore... traduicte nouvellement du Latin en François..., Paris, Chez Hierosme, de Marnf, & la vefue Guillaume Cauellat, 1587.
The first edition of the Ecclesiastic History by Nikephoros Xanthopoulos (Callistus Xanthopoulos) was printed in Paris in 1630, while the Latin translation by Jean Langus came out in Basel in 1553, subsequently repeatedly reprinted, mainly in Paris. The text of the History is based on a single and unique manuscript reaching the library of Matthias Corvinus in Buda, from Constantinople. When Buda was conquered by the Turks (1541) the codex was transferred to the Seraglio of Constantinople, whence it was purchased by a German who then sold it to Vienna’s Imperial Library.
