Methodios Anthrakites. διορθώσει Γεωργίου Κωνσταντίνου..., vol. I, Venice, Antonio Bortoli, 1749.
The Odos Mathematikes contains diverse treatises of geometry, trigonometry, geography, the work of Euclid, Theodosius and Proclus, on the use of spheres and optics and was composed by Methodios Anthrakites. The edition is complemented and corrected by Anthrakites’s pupil Balanos Basilopoulos who was the editor as well. M. Anthrakites was born in the mid-seventeenth century; he studied in the West, philosophy principally. His liberal spirit led him to vicissitudes, as his initiative to translate philosophical works by Malebranche was reprehended by the Patriarchate to the point of condemning Anthrakites in 1721, forcing him to acknowledge the error of his ways publicly and to repudiate his teaching (1723). The Holy Synod was in fact not satisfied with his public repentance, obliging him to burn his philosophical essay and, in a circular to the Orthodox centres, enjoined the faithful to seek out copies and manuscript writings to consign them to the flames. The publication of the Odos Mathematikes had great significance for education, since it introduced mathematics into the school curriculum, an event acknowledged by all teachers of the Greek peoples.
