Daniel Philippides - Gregorios Konstantas. Γεωγραφία Νεωτερικὴ..., vol. I, Vienna, Thomas Trattner, 1791.
First and sole edition of the Geography, one of the most significant works of the Greek Enlightenment. It is divided into two sections, of which the first is headed ‘Peri Geinis Sphairas’ and the second ‘Peri tis Europes en genei’. Although the title intimates that a second volume is to circulate, this did not happen. The authors Philippides (1755-1832) and Konstantas (1758-1844) were born and bred in the Thessalian scholarly tradition, of Pelion in particular. They began an educational tour of the schools of Mt Athos, Chios and Constantinople and ended up in the Danubian Principalities. There they formed their intellectual personality and their particular style, moving in the intimate circle of Demetrios Katartzes.
