Erasmus, Epistolae D. Erasmi Roterdami ---, Basel, Io Frobenium, 1521.
This is the first edition of Erasmus's correspondence with eminent scholars and church officials, an exchange highly important for the history of Renaissance thought. The edition permits the reader to follow Erasmus's editorial achievements and to understand the conditions which made them possible, and it also shows how other humanist scholars helped Erasmus. It includes 617 letters, of which 170 were published here for the first time. Most of the letters refer to events which took place between 1519 and 1521, while some of them date from 1513. Several of Erasmus's letters reflect his ambiguity towards Luther's reforms, while at the same time he continued to attack the theologists of Louvain. The volume includes Erasmus's correspondence with Pope Leo X, Johann Reuchlin, Guillaume Budé and several others.
