This is the major edition of woodcut portraits of the scholars of the Renaissance, mainly those active in the cultural centres of Italy: P. Bembo, Ianus Laskares, M. Ficino, cardinal Bessarion and others. The portraits are accompanied by brief biographical notes. The first edition was released in 1546 and was repeatedly republished, as it formed part of a wider trend of books containing the biographies and portraits of prominent personalities from the ancient times onwards.
