LABORDE, Leon Emmanuel S.J. de, Marquis. Athènes aux XVe, XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Paris: Jules Renouard, 1854.
First edition of this significant travel account of the early period of contemporary Athens. It includes older, unpublished plans and sketches of the Acropolis and other monuments, and to date remains a major reference. Laborde first travelled to the Levant in 1825. In the years 1826-1827 he toured Smyrna and Syria, and in 1828 he explored Mount Sinai and Petra in modern-day Jordan. Both journeys gave birth to memorable travel accounts such as Journey through Arabia Petraea to Mount Sinai... and Voyage de l'Asie Mineure... The editions were published from 1838 to 1862. After retiring from his diplomatic career in 1845, Laborde was placed in charge of the conservation of Louvre's antiquities. He also wrote “Documents inédits ou peu connus sur l’histoire et les antiquités d’Athènes” and in 1874 he republished J. P. Babin's rare account of Athens in 1674. The engraving of “Demosthenes's Lantern” by Charles Meryon is missing, as is often the case, since Meryon's work was very sought-after.
