LEAKE, William Martin. The Topography of Athens with some Remarks of its Antiquities. London: John Murray, MDCCCXXI [=1821]
First edition. This work sometimes found unbound. A second edition appeared in 1841. The book was translated into German in 1823 and into French in 1823. Leake's work in Athens provided the foundation for the modern topographic and archaeological studies of the city. The letter included, without a recipient's name, is a formal response by Leake, in which he declines an invitation.
