Apollonius Rhodius. [Ἀργοναυτικά], [Published by Ianos Laskaris], Florence [Laurentius de Alopa], 1496.
First edition of Apollonius Rhodius’s Argonautica, a text that was particularly popular in European academic circles and was translated into other languages besides Latin. It must be Laskaris’s third printing venture and the second of the new publication philosophy he adopted after the Anthologia (Florilegium) using capitals for the text and lower case for comments, that is in precisely the style of the manuscript tradition. The commentary accompanying the edition is signed by Lucillus from Tarra in Crete, by Sophoclius (a grammarian from the second (?) century bc) and the Sophist Theon of Alexandria. The second edition was issued by the Aldine press in the time of Andrea Soceri in 1521.
