Liturgies.
First edition of the Λειτουργίαι (Liturgiai) and the outset of many reprints with corrections and supplements printed in Rome by Demetrios Doukas, an old collaborator of Aldus and publisher of Greek books in Alcala, Spain. The book was printed in the style of Z. Kallierges’s printing essays with extensive red-print and artistic initial letters, many of which are from Kallierges’s matrice. The preface of the Liturgies is addressed by Doukas to the Orthodox Christians everywhere «Τοῖς πανταχοῦ Ὀρθοδόξοις Χριστιανοῖς Δημήτριος Δουκᾶς ὁ Κρὴς εὖ πράττειν». The Liturgies were issued twice, with privilege of Pope Clement VII, and without. This book is at the same time also the last printing essay of a Greek publisher-printer of those who were active in Italy’s major publishing centres in the Renaissance, such as Aldus in Venice, of the Giunti in Florence, Kallierges in Rome and others. The subsequent Greek presence in Rome’s publishing circles dates to 1542 (see No. 74).
