Photius, Patriarch of Constantinople. Βιβλιοθήκη τοῦ Φωτίου, David Hoeschelius Augustanus, primus edidit..., Augsburg, ex officina Iohannis Praetorii, 1601.
First edition of this exceptionally significant work by Patriarch Photios, that occupied – and still does today – historians and philologists in regard to the sources of the rare material he recorded in the tenth century relating to works of Ancient Greek literature – or not (tenth century). The original title of this work was neither Bibliotheca nor Myriobiblos, the names by which they were known from the fourteenth century onwards, but “An inventory and enumeration of the books I have read, of which my beloved brother Tarasius requested a summary; these being twenty-one short of three hundred”. The edition was based on four manuscripts handed to David Hoeschel by various people, among them Maximos Margoumios, Bishop of Kythera, who was closely connected to him, publishing diverse works of his such as the ‘Hymnoi tou Anacreonta’ (1592).
