Erasmus. Des: Erasmi Rot: Moriae Encomium..., Amsterdam, apud Guilielmo Blauw, 1629.
The first edition of the Encomium was issued in Strasburg by M. Schurer in 1511 and in about the same year if not earlier, the same work had come out in Paris, undated, by G. De Gourmont. This work is a combination of the profound sources of Literary influence upon Erasmus by ancient writers, mainly Lucian, written by a man of Letters with deep, however, religious sentiment. The book received various critiques, some attaching it while it was acclaimed by others. G. Budé, for instance, writes to Erasmus: “Your eloquence perfectly and seamlessly matched the Selenians with the Apostle Paul, dissimilar figures, comical teasing with the highest resionsness, the Bacchanales with the Eleusinians and, once more showing the world’s instability, you have brought new views to dazzle our eyes”.
