First edition of this Histoire by L. Cousin (1627-1707), a French translator who from 1659 devoted himself to translation of the earliest ecclesiastic writers mainly. He was editor of the periodical Journal des Savants from 1687 to 1702. Cousin drew material from historians such as Procopius, Agathias, Polymeris, Doukas et al.
