First edition of the Ecclesiastike Historia, based on a manuscript housed in the library of the king of France François I and which marks the outset of the use of the Grecs du Roi font, cut by Claude Garamont on the basis of the handwriting of Angelos Vergikios – a renowned calligrapher from Crete and counsellor of the king himself in matters of books. The edition, enriched with artistic headings and initial letters became a model of aesthetics for French printing as well as Geneva’s in regard to the transposition of the tradition of writing by hand to printing. This printing-publishing activity, under the royal roof, was also marked by a new printer’s mark: a spear as a sort of tree trunk, flowering, around which a serpent is coiled. At the base of the mark the saying appears: Basile t’agatho kratero t’aichmete.
