The first edition of this treatise was printed in 1587 and was composed by Florimond de Raemond (1540-1601), a French Catholic historian inimical to heresies. All three of his works were very popular, such as the Antichrist (1597) and one relating to the Reformation of the Protestants, posthumously published in 1605.
