Meletios, Metropolitan of Athens (Michael Mitros). Μελετίου Γεωγραφία παλαιὰ καὶ νέα..., Venice, Nikolaos Glykys, 1728
First edition of the Geography, composed before 1696 sourced from foreign reference books as well as Greek geographers such as Strabo and Pausanias. It is a historical geography in which inscriptions and remains of antiquity are recorded and reproduced. Meletios’s initiative is innovating for Greek scientists and expresses the consciousness of the historical continuity of Hellenism.
Michael Mitros (1661-1714) was born in Ioannina and studied philology, mathematics, rhetoric and medicine in Italy. Upon his return to his birthplace he taught at the school named School of Epiphanios and on being ordained, took the name Meletios.
