This first edition and possibly first attempt of a Modern Greek novel is the work by Nikolaos Mavrokordatos written in 1719, unpublished for many years. Its publisher Gregorios Konstantas records his impressions from his Preface, teeming with references to Western education. A letter from the Abbé Bignon, librarian of the king of France, is incorporated in the edition in French and with the Greek translation.
