Thesaurus Lingue Graecae is Henricus Stephanus's opus magnum. Its edition was a landmark both in his career and in the history of classical scholarship. The concept of the work belongs to his father, Robertus Stephanus, who wished to publish a work on the Greek language analogous to Latinae Linguae Thesaurus. The Thesaurus was compiled following an innovative technique; the material is not ordered alphabetically, in the traditional manner; instead, words were grouped according to etymology. The Thesaurus did not sell as well as expected, since the amount of work required and the high price set for the five volumes prevented it from circulating widely in scholarly circles. In addition, it was published at the time of the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Day, an unfortunate coincidence which made distribution of the book in France even harder.
