Third edition, expanded. First printed in 1777 as Spirit of Athens. A new edition, titled History of Athens appeared in 1786. A pamphlet advertising the third edition, containing the author's introduction to the text, was published in 1803. Young was a politician and economist, who wrote on the West Indies and published Hornermann's travel accounts. He was mainly interested in ancient Athens as a model state.
